Hip Turn In Golf Swing

A proper hip turn / hip rotation / hip movement is very important if you want to make a perfect golf swing. When hip action is done correctly, you’re able to swing the club at any speed.

Key Muscles For Golf Hip Movement

To get a proper hip turn, the key muscles for hip movement have to be strong and flexible. These are gluteal and hip.  For the average person these muscles are tight because of our modern lifestyle of sitting every where, in the office at home and during driving. To get them strong do resistance training and to make them flexible make sure you stretch them.

Correct Hip Position

According to Golf Tips Mag.

To achieve proper hip action, simply take your setup and, in slow motion, swing into impact and pose. Then, take a club and lay it across your hips—it should point at a 45-degree angle (most poor golfers create only a 10-degree hip angle at impact). This 45-degree impact angle is critical, and you can get there correctly by simply making your hips shuttle diagonally to the 45-degree position—a shortcut I call “oblique left” for righties, or “oblique right” for lefties. The shortcut works because of the way the body coils in the backswing. Studies show that at the top of the swing, the hips should have rotated 45 degrees, and from this position, all you have to do is simply move over to the impact position, and the shift, the slide and the pivot will take care of themselves.

Stanford University Perfect Golf Swing

Stanford University have published a research on how to make the perfect golf swing. In a high-tech analysis of golfers — following the backswing to the follow-through — a research team identified several key biomechanical factors that produce power, separating the elite professionals from the amateurs.

The research tried to find the ideal motion of the hips and shoulders in order to make the perfect golf swing.

Stanford research team compared golf swing of pros vs amateurs. The pros shared the following characteristics that made the perfect golf swing :-

  • They always initiated their downswing by rotating their hips
  • A 56 degree difference, on average, in the rotational position of the shoulders and hips.
  • A 25 degree upward tilt of the leading shoulder.
  • A 12 degree upward tilt of the leading hip.
